Explaining Growth

The Global Research Project (GRP) on Explaining Growth has set out to explain the growth experience of the seven regions participating in the Global Development Network - East Asia, South Asia, Latin America and Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Former Soviet Union, Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal is to take a long historical perspective - 30 to 50 years depending on data - but with an emphasis on more recent events and prospects for the future. The project is being conducted in two phases. In the first phase, several thematic papers have been produced for each region. These have been synthesized in a volume, scheduled for release in the autumn of 2000. In the second phase, the regional papers are providing the framework for a series of country studies. The country studies are scheduled to be completed by late 2002. Several regions will publish volumes of country studies. A synthesis volume is also being planned for Phase 2. Several eminent economists are serving as resource persons to provide advice and guidance on the papers. The project is also being supported by the World Bank's Research and Data Groups and by the International Economic Association.
